Whether you are doing your own boat or starting a business, you are going to need some tools...

What Tools do you need for Boat Upholstery?
If you're thinking about fixing up your boat's seats, or maybe you want to start a business doing boat upholstery you'll need some key tools to get the job done right. Here's a simple guide to what you'll need:
Basic Tools for Boat Upholstery
Measuring Tape
To make sure your fabric fits just right, you need a measuring tape. It helps you measure the material for both the quoting side and buying your material. Easier options are available as you grow, like the material estimator.
Scissors and/or a Fabric Cutter
You'll need sharp scissors or a fabric cutter to cut the fabric. If you have material that frays you will need pinking shears.
Staple Gun & Staples
A staple gun is used to attach the fabric to the seats. Some cushions are on boards so it will come in handy for this too. Make sure you use stainless steel staples as these will avoid rust runs from the marine environment.
Sewing Machine
For making seat covers, a sewing machine is important. It needs to be strong enough for thick boat fabrics. See our other post for “which machine?”
Specialised Tools
Heat Gun
A heat gun helps stretch and smooth out vinyl so it looks nice. Be careful not to use too much heat, though, or you might damage the fabric.
Upholstery Foam Cutter
To cut foam for cushions, an electric foam cutter helps you get the shape and size just right. These range in price and you can start with an electric bread knife.
Snap Fastener Kit
This kit helps you put snaps on covers, so they can be easily attached or removed, again these range in price and can up to £250 for a decent one but you can start with a £20 one.
Safety Equipment
Safety Glasses and Gloves
These protect your eyes and hands when working with sharp tools.
Dust Mask
A dust mask helps you breathe safely when cutting foam or using glue.
Additional Supplies
Upholstery Fabric
Pick strong, sun-proof fabric like marine-grade vinyl for your boat seats. A material blog is coming soon....
Adhesives and Sealants
You may need waterproof glue and sealants to stick fabric down and keep water out.
Foam
Good foam will make the seats comfy and help prevent mold. There are different foams for different areas - see this post.
Conclusion
With these tools and materials, you'll be ready to make your boat seats look great and last a long time. Take your time and pay attention to details for the best results!
